Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 3, Week 46
November 23, 2011

Crime Stoppers reminds everyone that this is the time of year when burglars take advantage of us as we enjoy the festive season.  Recent examples include an early morning burglary in La Grande Princesse, St. Croix; a November 14th burglary of a store in Mongoose Junction, St John, and a series of burglaries on St. Thomas in the areas of Est. Fortuna, Santa Maria, Bonne Esperance, Est. Hope, Est. Pearl, Commandant Gade, Lindbergh Bay, Contant, Smith Bay, Nadir, Annas Retreat, Rosendahl and Wintberg.

Each year, as Christmas draws near, the number of burglaries increases.  However, history shows that most burglaries are a crime of opportunity and are preventable.  Make sure your doors and windows are locked and secure in your homes and automobiles. Don’t leave items worth stealing in plain view. Leave a light on in areas where your neighbors can’t easily see what is happening. Jot down the license plate numbers of strange cars in your neighborhood.  Take a good second look at that person lurking suspiciously around your neighbor’s home or car and then call 911 with a description.

The Virgin Islands Police Department is advising all business owners to activate your alarm and surveillance systems as an additional means of preventing your business from being targeted.

Law enforcement cannot control crime without the help of our citizens.  You and your neighbors can reduce the chance of becoming a burglary victim.  Be vigilant.  Implement the preventative tips we`ve just mentioned.  Individuals, business owners and villa companies, working together with the aggressive police initiatives that are being implemented throughout the territory this holiday season can make a difference.  If you see something, say something.  If you know something about any of the prior burglaries throughout our territory, say something.

Let’s continue to help make our community a safer place to live by submitting information on these or any other crimes at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages.  The minimum reward for the arrest of a burglar is $714 plus 10% of the retail value of any goods recovered.

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 3, Week 45
November 16, 2011

Crime Stoppers needs your help to stop fraud and corruption in the US Virgin Islands.

Whether it is a government agency, a private business, an appointed or elected official, too frequently we are learning about a fraudulent act that has allegedly been committed.  Recent reports have revealed that some government employees have been charged with fraud for allegedly stealing and selling government property for personal gain. Other reports have revealed that some elected officials have stolen taxpayers’ money.  In some cases these acts were being committed for years before the individuals were caught.  We can no longer afford not to speak up. Corruption and fraud affects all of us in some way.  Not only does it erode our confidence in our public servants, it hits us all in the wallet through increased taxes, rates, and fees.  If we don`t say something, consider what we will have to pay to maintain our families.  We can no longer continue to allow these persons to take the easy road to prosperity at our expense.

Often when we think of crime, we think of things occurring on the streets to specific individuals and homes.  Taking something that isn’t yours is a crime, period.  Engaging in corruption and fraud is a crime, period.  If you know of any crimes involving businesses such as tax evasion, stealing electricity, illegal hiring practices, importing illegal weapons, etc., call Crime Stoppers.  If you know of any public servants who are involved in stealing public funds or property, accepting bribes for services, or anything of this nature, call Crime Stoppers.  The corruption must end.  You work hard to enjoy this place we call Paradise; please become a part of making our Territory a better place to live by telling us what you may know about these or any other crimes.  Your information will be submitted to the appropriate law enforcement agency, and you will remain anonymous.

You can submit tips to 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), www.crimestoppersusvi.org, or you can text it to CRIMES (274637).  You must include “USVI” in the body of your text message.  If your information helps law enforcement solve a crime, you will receive a cash reward.

St. Croix:  Over the past several weeks, there have been numerous shootings across the island, causing deaths and serious injuries.  The gun buyback netted more than 100 guns this year, but many illegal guns are still on the streets, and it’s those guns that cause us to live in fear, wondering if we or a family member will be the next victim.  Please help erase this fear by telling us who the dealers and sellers of these illegal weapons are.

St. John:  Sometime between November 3 at 11:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. the next day, the accounting office at Caneel Bay Resort was broken into.  The burglar(s) removed glass louvers from the northern window, they entered the office, and stole two safes.  To do this, the burglars had to carry equipment into the building and leave with the two safes and the equipment.  Tell us what you know so law enforcement can identify and arrest these criminal(s).

St. ThomasOn January 6, 2005 at 9:41 p.m., police officers were dispatched to the area of Mandahl Beach Road due to a report of shots fired.  Upon arrival they found a lifeless black man lying on the ground with several gunshot wounds to the head and body.  The victim was later identified as Jayder Chemont.  Tell us what you know about this murder so the killer(s) can be brought to justice and the victim’s family can have closure.

Over the last three years, your tips to Crime Stoppers have helped law enforcement to make 141 arrests and to take 78 illegal weapons off the streets.  Let’s continue to help make our community a safer place to live by submitting information on these or any other crimes at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages.  If your tip leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property, illegal drugs, or weapons, you will receive a cash reward to be paid according to your instructions.
