Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 3, Week 32
August 17, 2011

Crime Stoppers needs your help to solve the following burglaries.  If you know something, say something, as it is very difficult for law enforcement to identify and arrest burglars without your help.  Even the smallest bit of information may be just what law enforcement needs to solve these cases.

St. Croix:  Over the past several weeks, burglaries have occurred in the mid-island area of St. Croix, encompassing the following communities: Ginger Thomas, Strawberry, and Barren Spot leading to Mary`s Fancy.  These burglars are entering homes and stealing family possessions.  Tell us what you have seen.  Describe the people involved, any vehicles, and the people who are buying the stolen items.

St. John:  On Monday August 8 at around 2:15 a.m., police were dispatched to a burglary in progress at Isla Vista Villa in Estate Pastory, which was occupied by a couple.  The husband had been investigating a noise on the lower level, and encountered an intruder who was entering the villa through the northwestern door.  While his wife called 911, the husband struggled with the intruder who hit him on the head with a black handgun and then fled.  The intruder was described as a black male, 5’ 5” tall, 130 pounds, wearing dark clothing and a dark bandana or doo-rag.

We have the power to minimize the problem of burglary.  Let’s continue to help make our community a safer place to live by submitting information on these or any other crimes at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages.  The minimum reward for the arrest of a burglar is $714 plus 10% of the value of the property recovered.  The maximum reward is $2,500.  Rewards are paid according to your instructions.

Crime Stoppers has been asked, “Where does the specific information about crimes mentioned in our weekly release come from?”  All specifics about crimes are provided by law enforcement.  For St. Croix, the info currently comes from Lt. Thomas Hannah.  On St. Thomas, it is provided by Officer Nicholas Francois.  On St. John, the source is Deputy Chief Darren Foy.

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 3, Week 31
August 10, 2011

Crime Stoppers is asking your help to solve the following crimes.  If you know something, say something, as law enforcement cannot control crime without the help of all of us.

St. Croix:  Over the past several months, the Harvey/Bethlehem Housing Community has been plagued by robberies, thefts and burglaries.  Unknown individuals have stripped homes of copper tubing and wiring, robbed individuals in their homes, and broken into maintenance storage areas.  Burglary only pays if the burglar needs the goods or can sell them.  Tell us what you know about the thieves and the unscrupulous individuals and dealers who are buying the stolen goods so law enforcement can identify and arrest them.  The minimum reward for the arrest of a burglar is $714 plus 10% of the value of the property recovered.  The maximum reward is $2,500.

St. John:  During the nights of July 29 and 30, three burglaries occurred in Estate Enighed, Estate Bethany, and Estate Chocolate Hole.  In all three burglaries, the residents had left a sliding glass door, a window, or a front door unlocked before going to sleep.  Upon awakening, they discovered their residences had been burglarized.  VIPD is urging all citizens to make sure that they thoroughly lock and secure all doors and windows of their residences and businesses, as burglaries are a crime of opportunity.  When that opportunity is removed, the chance of a burglary is reduced.

St. Thomas:  On Sunday July 31 around 7:30 p.m., Alexis Lima was shot in the area of Fort Milner at the Cock Pit by an unknown assailant who later escaped from the area.

Let’s continue to help make our community a safer place to live by submitting information on these or any other crimes at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages.  If your information leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property, illegal drugs, or weapons, you will receive a cash reward of up to $2,500.

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 3, Week 24
June 22, 2011

Almost all of us want a safe community.  But too many of us think that reporting a criminal is “snitching,” while others continue to buy stolen goods, thereby helping to make “crime pay.”  We need to ensure that crime does not pay.  So far, your tips have helped law enforcement make 134 arrests.  Tell us what you know about the following crimes and help keep the arrests coming.  We will not eliminate crime completely, but with your help, we can make crime in our territory a minor irritation.  If you know something, say something.

St. Croix:  One of the most hidden crimes in our community is elder abuse, which can be physical, emotional, sexual, or financial.  By learning the signs of elder abuse and how to act on behalf of an elderly person who is being abused, you will be helping someone while strengthening your own defenses against future elder abuse.  If you suspect a senior is being abused, please tell us.  For more information on the warning signs, please Google “Elder Abuse and Neglect.”

St. John:  On Wednesday June 1, a burglary occurred at a residence at 110 Little Cinnamon Bay between 5:50 a.m. and 3:55 p.m.  The burglar(s) entered the home via the wooden window shutters on the eastern side.  Items stolen were a grey Canon A590 IS digital camera, a grey Olympus SP-60042 digital camera, a belt with a buckle of a pirate’s head wearing a red head tie, and a red buckle that says “Don’t Drink and Drive.”

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 3, Week 22
June 08, 2011

Crime Stoppers needs your help to make our territory a safer place to live, work, and raise a family.  If you know something, say something, as law enforcement cannot control crime without your help.  For example, in the territory, there has been an increase in the theft of various metal products from our homes, businesses, and utility companies.  One incident that has law enforcement really perplexed is the daylight theft of 40 aluminum louvered windows from a business that was closed at the time.  This business is surrounded by a number of residences and the only description of the thief is, “A male with locks driving an old model pick-up.” If you see something suspicious, please call 911 immediately.

In addition to the direct cost of replacing stolen items, there are many indirect costs that we all pay.  Some of these costs include the disruption of important services, and the cost of preventive measures such as locks, alarms, etc.  Others include the increased cost of medical bills, missed work, police, courts, and prisons.  According to a study from 1999, the total cost of crime in the United States was $4,118 per year for each man, woman, and child.  We are all paying for the costs of crime.  It’s time to tell law enforcement who is buying these stolen metals.  If you have seen a backyard scrap metal shop, then give us the details.  And keep in mind that it is the certainty of punishment, not the severity of the punishment that makes criminals think twice.

Please continue to help make our community a safer place to live by submitting information on these or any other crimes at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages.  If your tip leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property, illegal drugs, or weapons, you will receive a cash reward of up to $2,500.  The minimum reward for the arrest of a burglary suspect is $714 plus 10% of the value of any property recovered.

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 3, Week 15
April 20, 2011

Crime Stoppers and the officers and detectives of local law enforcement thank the citizens of the U.S. Virgin Islands who have submitted 1,140 tips concerning various criminal acts over the last two years.  Your tips have assisted in making at least 117 arrests while helping to bring closure to victims and their families.

The tips we receive involve persons suspected of murder, burglary, robbery, sexual assault, and many other types of crime.  For example, in St. Croix, an individual is now in jail after trying to avoid apprehension from his involvement in the shooting death of a resident.  The list of unsolved criminal acts is long, but now, because of your assistance, the list has become shorter.  Crime Stoppers and law enforcement thank you, the anonymous tipsters, for your help in making our territory safer.  Without your assistance, those 117 suspects would not have been arrested.

However, we cannot rest on our accomplishments as there are many other criminals who need to be brought before the bar of justice.  One example is the killer(s) of Juan Ayala, a resident of St. John, who was shot in his driveway on the morning of January 5, 2009 at about 8:00 a.m.  Another is the person(s) who shot and killed Sean O’Connell in the area of Mandahl Beach on St. Thomas as he and his wife were returning home on Friday April 1 at 9:50 p.m.  Law enforcement cannot control crime without the help of citizens.  If you know something, say something.  Even the smallest bit of information may be just what law enforcement needs to identify and arrest these criminals.

Let’s continue to help make our community a safer place to live by submitting information on these or any other crimes at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages.  If your tip leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property, illegal drugs, or weapons, you will receive a cash reward of up to $2,500.  Only anonymous callers to Crime Stoppers are eligible for these cash rewards.
