Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 4, Week 40
October 17, 2012

The cost of crime is always paid by the law abiding citizens of the community through higher prices and higher taxes.  Reducing that cost puts money back in our pockets.  If you know something, say something as law enforcement cannot control crime without your help.

St. Thomas:  On Wednesday, September 12 at 10:15 p.m. at Magens Point Resort, three masked men broke a glass window and entered the lobby area of the resort.  The armed robbers pointed black handguns at two women, ordered them not to move, and then robbed the resort of $443 and the women of an iPhone in a black case and a purple bag that included $100 cash, a driver license, and a social security card.

Tell us what you know so law enforcement can identify and arrest these criminals.  Submit your information on these or any other crimes at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by texting “USVI” plus your message to CRIMES (274637).  Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages.  If your tip leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property, illegal drugs, or weapons, you will receive a reward to be paid according to your instructions.  The minimum cash reward for the arrest of an armed robber is $900.  For the arrest of a burglar it is $714.  In both cases the reward is increased by 10% of the retail value of property recovered.  Our maximum reward is capped at $2,500.

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 4, Week 37
September 26, 2012

Crime Stoppers thanks the community for the over 1600 tips submitted since the program began in January of 2009. In addition we would like to explain again exactly how you remain totally anonymous when you submit a tip via the Crime Stoppers program.

Using the communication network provided by national Crime Stoppers affiliates, we have technology which makes it impossible for us, law enforcement, an attorney, or anybody else to trace your phone call, text message, or web tip back to you. When you dial 1-800-222-TIPS, the call goes to a private telephone company in Virginia. They transfer your call to one of their own in-house phone lines and then forward it on to our answering service in Texas. Even if one of our Texas operators had caller ID, which they don’t, the only number they would see is from Virginia, not your number. So, if someone were able to get the telephone records of our Texas answering service, the number recorded would be from the service in Virginia. The Virginia Company purges all of their transfer records at the end of each month. Web and Text Tips are handled in a similar fashion. The messages are routed to computers in Canada where it is legal to transfer your message to another computer before forwarding it on to us. Even though we can send messages back and forth, this makes it impossible for anyone to trace a message back to your computer or your cell phone.

Finally, special IRS rules permit all Crime Stoppers rewards to be paid in cash with no tax reporting. One of our volunteers will deliver the cash to you, at a time and place of your choosing, or, we will even hide it somewhere for you to pick up later.

Since the original Crime Stoppers organization began service in 1976, there are no known instances where an anonymous citizen`s identity has ever been revealed using Crime Stoppers information. If you know something, you can safely say something by submitting your information on any crimes at http://www.crimestoppersusvi.org/ or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by texting “USVI” plus your message to CRIMES (274637).

St. Croix:  On July 16 at approximately 1:00 a.m., police responded to a call for shots fired at the Lorraine Village housing community.  Upon arrival police found the lifeless body of Francisco Budhoo, a.k.a. August 15, 2012

On Sunday, August 5th at approximately 11:00 p.m. in Mon Bijou, St. Croix, Sabree Spencer became the latest victim of gun violence in the territory.  Yes, Mr. Spencer had a criminal history and was recently released from prison and yes, it is possible his death was the result of retaliation for something he did to someone else.  However, none of that justifies the killing of Mr. Spencer or any another individual.

Law enforcement officers cannot identify and arrest the killer(s) of Mr. Spencer or solve any of the other homicides in the territory by themselves, nor can they put an end to the senseless killings of our children and grandchildren.  Often it requires citizens like you to speak up; doing so means you are part of the solution

According to Answer.com, “basically, there are two sides to an issue or a conflict (the Pros and the Cons). As an individual, you lie on either one side of the situation or the other. This means that if you are making an actual or physical part or effort in resolving the problem or situation, i.e., making actions and genuine effort to either recruiting others to aid in the resolution, or accomplishing deeds or tasks that efficiently and successfully remove obstacles standing in the way of the resolution, and/or making successful accomplishments or tasks that solve or complete or finalize the resolution to the issue or conflict, then obviously you are part of the solution".

Let’s help our law enforcement officers reduce crime.  If you know anything about who is responsible for the death of Mr. Sabree or any of the other unsolved homicides please call 911 ASAP.  If you feel the need to remain anonymous then submit your information on this or any other crime at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Your calls to Crime Stoppers are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages.  If your tip leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property, illegal drugs, or weapons, in addition to being part of the solution, you will receive a cash reward to be paid according to your instructions.
