Please notify law enforcement if you observe any suspicious behavior, especially around construction sites or vacant houses.  In the event you feel a need to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers.

St. John:  Law enforcement is still looking for Seara Samantha James, who was reported missing in October of 2011. They entered the store and demanded that the employees “get down on the floor and don`t move”.  The robbers then removed jewelry from the show cases, and drove off in a silver or grey Dodge Caravan. The minivan was later discovered parked in the Paul M. Pearson Gardens housing community.

Let’s continue to help make our community a safer place to live by submitting information on these or any other crimes at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages.  If your tip leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property, illegal drugs, or weapons, you will receive a cash reward to be paid according to your instructions.  The minimum reward for the arrest of a thief is $536.  For the arrest of an armed robber it is $900, plus in all cases, 10% of the retail value of property recovered, up to a total reward of $2,500.

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 4, Week 14
April 18, 2012

Crime Stoppers wants everyone to know that federal and local laws clearly state that you cannot abuse, harm, sexually assault, threaten or stalk your partner. You, the partner, DO NOT have to face domestic violence alone, in fear, or in shame. Help is available at every level within the community. Many organizations have worked hard to change the idea that what happens to family members in the home is private and none of anyone else`s business. The truth is that when someone is hurt by his or her partner, it is a community problem and if reported, it will get a community response.

Each day we hear different stories about victims attacked in front of family members, particularly children, in public places, at work, and at home.  Domestic Violence Awareness should be a topic of discussion each and every day until the message is heard loud and clear, "Domestic Violence is not tolerated in the Virgin Islands."

If you are a victim of domestic violence or know someone who is being victimized, you can do several things.  In an emergency; call 911 immediately.  Otherwise call your local police precinct and ask for help from the Family Division of the Superior Court or; on St. Thomas, the Family Resource Center at (340) 776-3966 or 776-STOP (7867); on St. John, the St. John Community Crisis Center at (340) 693-SAFE (7233); and on St. Croix, the Women`s Coalition at (340) 773-9272. These numbers are listed on our website.

Domestic violence incidents are increasing in our Territory, and too often lives are being torn apart or lost. Whether it’s physical or mental abuse, it must stop. If you know of anyone who is being harmed in a relationship, but has not reported it to law enforcement or any agency, let us know at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Your call could save a life.

Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages. If your tip leads to an arrest, in addition to possibly saving a life, you will receive a cash reward to be paid according to your instructions.

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 4, Week 13
April 11, 2012

Crime Stoppers needs your help to continue making our US Virgin Islands a safer place to live, work and raise a family.  This week, we`d like to explain exactly how your tips remain totally anonymous.

Protecting your anonymity is key to the success of the Crime Stoppers program.  Using the communication facilities provided by national Crime Stoppers affiliates, we have technology in place which makes it virtually impossible for us, law enforcement, an attorney, or anybody else to trace your phone call, text message, or web tip back to you.

When you dial 1-800-222-TIPS, the call goes to a private telephone company in Virginia.  They transfer your call to one of their own in-house phone lines and then forward it on to our answering service in Texas.  Even if one of our Texas operators had caller ID, which they don’t, the only number they would see is from Virginia, not your number. So, if someone were able to get the telephone records of our Texas answering service, the number recorded would be from the service in Virginia.  The Virginia company purges all of their transfer records at the end of each month.  Web and Text Tips are handled in a similar fashion.  The messages are routed to computers in Canada where it is legal to transfer your message to another computer before forwarding it on to us.  Even though we can send messages back and forth, this makes it impossible for anyone to trace a message back to your computer or your cell phone.

Finally, special IRS rules permit all Crime Stoppers rewards to be paid in cash with no tax reporting.  One of our volunteers will deliver the cash to you, at a time and place of your choosing, or, we will even hide it somewhere for you to pick up later.

Since the original Crime Stoppers organization began service in 1976, there are no known instances where an anonymous citizen`s identity has ever been revealed using Crime Stoppers information.  If you know something, you can safely say something by submitting your information on any crimes at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 4, Week 11
March 28, 2012

Crime Stoppers needs your help reducing vehicle thefts in the community. If you know something, say something, as law enforcement cannot control crime without your help.

We read about it! We cry about it! We pay for it! Vehicle theft occurs daily in the Virgin Islands. Vehicles are not stolen just for their parts; they are being used in serious crimes such as drive-by shootings, robberies, burglaries and rapes. Who is stealing the vehicles? Where are they being hidden? Who are the buyers and the sellers? How does a Jeep Cherokee stolen on St. Croix find its way to Trinidad?

You can do your part in reducing the likelihood of your vehicle being stolen. Park your car in a way that makes stealing it difficult. Park in visible, well-lit areas, lock valuables in the trunk, and never leave your vehicle running while you go into a store or gas station.

Recent surveys have found that 79% of drivers always lock their vehicles and 93% never leave spare keys in their vehicle. However, one-third of drivers admit to leaving their vehicle running, 47% don’t park in well-lit areas, 40% don’t hide their valuables, and one-quarter have left a purse or wallet visible in the car. Although most drivers know there are consequences of vehicle theft such as paying the insurance deductible and the cost of replacing vehicles not covered by insurance, virtually none consider insurance premium increases, the cost of time spent dealing with police, vehicle rental costs, and the cost of time off from work.

Vehicle theft affects more than just the victim. Tell us what you know. Help make our community a safer place to live by submitting information on vehicle theft at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org or by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Your tips are completely anonymous, and the stateside operators speak several languages. If your tip leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property, illegal drugs, or weapons, you will receive a cash reward to be paid according to your instructions. The minimum reward for the arrest of a vehicle theft suspect is $536 plus 10% of the value of any property recovered. The maximum reward is $2,500.

Crime Stoppers USVI Needs Your Help-Year 4, Week 1
January 18, 2012

Crime Stoppers is asking your help to keep our anonymous tip program active and dynamic in the US Virgin Islands.  If you know something, please do something this week for all of us.

This is the first weekly release of our fourth year of reaching out to the Virgin Islands community.  On January 9, 2009 our 1-800-222-TIPS phone number became fully functional, operated by a professional, totally anonymous Crime Stoppers answering service in Texas.  In the three years since, our media partners have published, aired and televised over 150 weekly releases.  You in the community have submitted 1,435 tips which have helped our law enforcement officers make 147 additional arrests, recover 80 illegal guns as well as over $280,000 in stolen property and drugs.

This week, please visit the "Support Us" page on our website,  www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org, to learn how you can support our rewards fund.  To date, we`ve authorized 130 rewards totaling $108,386 and paid out 57 of those rewards, $46,188, for valuable information that has, in fact, helped make our community a safer place to live, work and raise a family.

If you have any experience with law enforcement organizations, or if you have office or bookkeeping skills or enjoy speaking to groups of children or adults, please consider offering a bit of your time to our volunteer effort.  Visit the "Contact Us" page on our website for our administrative email address and phone number.

Our Annual Meeting, open to all dues-paying members, is coming up again in June.  We will have several board member positions open for election.  Again, if you have any interest in learning more about how you can join us in our work for a safer community, check out the information on our website at www.CrimeStoppersUSVI.org.

The volunteers at Crime Stoppers USVI thank all of you: law enforcement, the media, our financial sponsors and of course you, the concerned citizen who have submitted information about crimes. Thank you all for working together with us for three successful years.  And we sincerely hope that this, our fourth year of service, will be one of unprecedented peace in the US Virgin Islands.
